About Us

Board of Directors
The Arc's board of directors is elected each year at an annual meeting of members. Our bylaws require at least half of our board to be constituents of The Arc: self-advocates with a developmental disability or people closely related to someone with a developmental disability.  Click the link above for a complete list of our current board of directors.

History
Since its founding by parents of children with intellectual disabilities in 1950, The Arc of Spokane has taken a leading role in improving the lives of individuals and families in Spokane County.  Over the years, our members have opened Spokane public schools to kids with special needs, provided vocational training to thousands, built a community center, and established residential living communities for adults with developmental disabilities.

More recently, advocates from The Arc of Spokane have helped improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities through:

  • The Spokane Public Transit Campaign--our 2004 effort to preserve public bus service in Spokane after state budget cuts threatened to eliminate routes that were crucial to people with developmental disabilities.

  • Hire Ability Day--a day to demonstrate the value of including people with developmental disabilities in the workplace.

Current Initiatives

Research Teams
In 2006 The Arc of Spokane sponsored a series of house meetings in which self-advocates, parents, professionals, and concerned citizens identified four areas of need for people with developmental disabilities:  Education, Housing, Social Inclusion, and Employment.

Since then, we have created research teams that will identify the challenges that people with developmental disabilities face in each of these areas and propose solutions.  A follow-up meeting of advocates in May, 2007 found good progress in all four areas, and we look forward to completing the research phase of our advocacy effort by spring 2008.  At that time, we will make a plan to address the issues identified by our research groups.
